When a keyboard’s rollover limit is exceeded, it fails to recognize additional keypresses beyond its maximum capacity. This results in missed inputs where some keystrokes are ignored, input blocking where the keyboard stops registering additional keys until one is released, or unexpected behavior on some keyboards that register incorrect keystrokes when the rollover limit is exceeded.

One critical detail most spec sheets don’t make obvious: modifier keys such as Shift, Ctrl, and Alt are typically handled by a separate circuit and do not count toward the rollover number. 2KRO — when does it become a real problem?

2KRO means the keyboard can only register 2 simultaneous non-modifier keys before errors occur. It’s found almost exclusively on cheap membrane keyboards. If you’re buying any mechanical keyboard today, you won’t encounter 2KRO.
