The fastest fix — check Fn Lock first (takes 10 seconds)
Many keyboards include an Fn Lock feature that switches the top row between standard F1–F12 behavior and shortcut actions such as volume, brightness, mute, keyboard backlight, airplane mode, or media playback.
Press Fn + Esc and retest. That single combination fixes the problem on the majority of Dell, Lenovo, HP, and external mechanical keyboards. Some models use a different combination — look for a small padlock icon or “FnLk” printed on the Esc key or F Lock key. Fn + Esc is the industry default for Fn Lock, but it isn’t universal — some HP laptops require Fn + ShiftLock, and some ASUS models use Fn + Insert.
After toggling, press F1 alone. If it opens a Help window, the F-row is now in standard function key mode. If it adjusts brightness or volume instead, toggle again.
Why function keys stop working — 5 causes

3 — Manufacturer hotkey utility overriding F-key behavior: Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS install background utilities that control how the F-row behaves at the software level. Common utility names include Dell Peripheral Manager, HP Hotkey Support, Lenovo Vantage, and the ASUS ATK Package. If the utility’s “Action Keys Mode” or “Hotkey Mode” is set to prioritize media functions, the F-row sends media commands regardless of Fn Lock state.
4 — Outdated or corrupted keyboard driver: Windows occasionally loses the keyboard driver mapping after an OS update or a sleep cycle. F-keys stop responding while letter keys work normally. Open Device Manager → Keyboards, right-click the keyboard entry, and select Update driver. If that doesn’t resolve it, select Uninstall device, disconnect the keyboard, reconnect it, and let Windows reinstall fresh.
5 — Application-level shortcut interception: Games, IDEs, design tools, and remote desktop applications often capture the entire F-row for their own shortcuts. F-keys that work on the desktop but fail inside a specific application are being intercepted by that application, not broken at the hardware or OS level.
How to fix F-keys not working on Windows 10 and 11
Follow in order — stop when F-keys restore:
- Fn + Esc — toggle Fn Lock, retest F1
- Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard — turn off Filter Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys
- Open the manufacturer utility (Lenovo Vantage, Dell Optimizer, HP Support Assistant, ASUS MyASUS) — find Hotkey Mode or Action Keys Mode — switch to “Function Key First”

How to fix F-keys not working on Mac
Mac keyboards default to media control behavior on the F-row — adjusting brightness, volume, and Mission Control. Standard F1–F12 behavior requires holding the Fn (or Globe) key by default.
To make F1–F12 work without holding Fn: Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Function Keys and turn on “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.” After this change, pressing F5 refreshes your browser directly, and holding Fn + F5 adjusts keyboard brightness.

How to fix F-keys not working on a laptop
Laptop F-key failures have one cause that desktops and external keyboards don’t: the BIOS setting. Fn Lock behavior on laptops is handled at the firmware level — built into the motherboard BIOS — not controlled by Windows. This is why changing a Windows keyboard setting often doesn’t fix it.
Check the BIOS setting: Restart and enter BIOS using the key shown on your brand’s boot screen. Look under System Configuration, Advanced, or Main for a setting named Function Key Behavior, Action Keys Mode, or Hotkey Mode. Set it to Function Key First for standard F1–F12 behavior by default, save with F10, and restart.
Install the manufacturer’s hotkey driver: Laptop F-keys rely on a background utility to process the function layer correctly. On some models, the function row doesn’t behave correctly until both the hotkey utility and chipset or system management driver are installed — not just the Windows keyboard driver. Test with an external keyboard: Plug a USB keyboard into the laptop. If F-keys work on the external keyboard but not the built-in one, the laptop’s internal keyboard has a hardware problem — not a software or BIOS issue. F-keys work in one app but not another — why
When F-keys work on the desktop and in most apps but fail inside one specific program, that program has registered those key combinations as its own global shortcuts. Games that use F5 to quicksave, IDEs that use F10 to step through code, and remote desktop clients that forward F-keys to the remote machine all capture those inputs before the OS can pass them elsewhere.
Check the application’s keybinding or shortcut settings. Rebind the conflicting shortcut to a different key combination, or disable the application’s global key capture mode if it has one. This is an application configuration problem — the keyboard itself is working correctly.
How to test whether your F-keys have a hardware problem
Open the keyboard tester online and press each F-key individually. The tester captures raw keydown events — it shows what the keyboard is actually sending before any OS, driver, or application layer processes the input.
F-key lights up in the tester: The hardware is fine. The problem is in your OS settings, manufacturer utility, BIOS configuration, or a specific application.
F-key stays dark in the tester: The key isn’t sending a keydown event. That’s a hardware or low-level driver failure. On a laptop, run the laptop keyboard test for the full built-in keyboard layout. Test your F-keys before adjusting any settings
Press each F-key in the keyboard tester online before changing BIOS settings, reinstalling drivers, or adjusting system preferences.
