How to clean a keyboard — the right way without damaging it

What cleaning actually fixes — and what it doesn’t

Cleaning removes debris, skin oils, food particles, and dust that cause keys to feel sticky, look grimy, or occasionally stick in the depressed position. A thorough clean restores the typing feel on keys that have become sluggish from oil buildup around the switch stem.

Mechanical keyboards collect dust, crumbs, and finger oils over time. This buildup can make keys feel sticky or even stop working correctly.

What cleaning doesn’t fix: electrical failures, chatter, dead keys, or worn switch contacts. If a key stops registering after cleaning, the problem was already present before you started — the cleaning process exposed it rather than caused it. Run the keyboard tester online before cleaning to document which keys are working and which aren’t. Any key that stays dark in the tester before cleaning will stay dark after — cleaning won’t restore electrical contact.

Cleaning frequency: for heavy keyboard users, clean every 2–4 weeks. For lighter use, every 1–2 months. If you frequently snack near your keyboard, wipe it down weekly and do a thorough clean monthly.

Tools you need — and what NOT to use

What to use

  • Wire keycap puller — gentler on keycap legends than plastic ring pullers, which can leave marks on double-shot keycaps
  • Microfiber cloths (2) — lint-free and scratch-free; one for cleaning, one for drying
  • Soft-bristle brush — paintbrush or dedicated keyboard cleaning brush
  • 90%+ isopropyl alcohol (IPA) — not 70%, which contains too much water
  • Mild dish soap — a few drops in warm water for keycap soaking
  • Cotton swabs — for switch housing cleaning and tight corners
  • Handheld vacuum (rollerless) — pulls debris out of switch housings rather than pushing it deeper

What NOT to use

Canned or compressed air drives debris deeper into switch housings and causes condensation on metal components — avoid completely. Paper towels leave microfibers and tiny scratches on keycap surfaces — always use microfiber. 70% isopropyl alcohol contains 30% water which seeps into switches and takes hours to dry. Boiling or very hot water warps both ABS and PBT keycaps — always use warm, not hot water. Bleach and multi-surface sprays strip coatings, fade legends, and corrode the plate.

One addition: never spray any liquid directly onto the keyboard. Spray onto the cloth first, then wipe.

Surface clean — compressed air and brush (5 minutes)

A surface clean handles routine dust and debris without keycap removal. Run this weekly or whenever the keyboard looks dusty.

  1. Unplug the keyboard — USB cable out, or power off wireless and remove batteries.
  2. Tilt the keyboard at 75 degrees — hold it upside down and shake gently to dislodge loose crumbs.
  3. Blow compressed air between keys at a 45-degree angle from the side — never straight down into the switch housing. Work left to right across each row.
  4. Brush the surface with a soft-bristle brush to sweep debris toward the edges and off the board.
  5. Wipe the keycaps with a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with 90%+ IPA — this removes finger oils and surface grime from the keycap tops without reaching the switch.
  6. Wipe the case — bottom and sides — with the same cloth.

A cleaning gel pressed into the gaps between keys picks up fine particles that air can’t reach — press it in, lift it out, and the gel pulls debris with it. Cleaning gel is optional but effective for keyboards that haven’t been cleaned in several months.

Deep clean — keycap removal and switch cleaning (30–45 minutes)

A deep clean removes accumulated grime from both the keycap undersides and the keyboard surface beneath the keys. Do this every 3–6 months or after a liquid spill.

Step 1 — Photograph your layout. Take a photo of your keyboard layout before removing any keycaps — use it as a reference when reinstalling to avoid putting keys in the wrong positions. Group keycaps by row after removal so the reference photo is easier to follow.

Step 2 — Remove all keycaps. Use the wire keycap puller — hook it under the keycap on both sides of the switch stem and lift straight up with even pressure. For stabilized keys (spacebar, Enter, Shift, Backspace), remove them slowly — the stabilizer wire hooks into the keycap underside and needs to be unhooked carefully rather than yanked free.

Step 3 — Soak and clean keycaps. Fill a bowl with warm water — not hot, as high heat warps plastic — and add a few drops of mild soap. Soak keycaps for 10–15 minutes to loosen grime. For ABS keycaps, reduce soak time to 5–10 minutes — ABS is more prone to developing shine with prolonged exposure. Gently scrub each keycap with a soft brush, paying attention to textured surfaces like the homing bars on the F and J keys.

Rinse thoroughly and air-dry keycaps upside down on a microfiber cloth for 2–3 hours before reinstalling. Do not reinstall damp keycaps — moisture trapped over a switch housing can damage the switch or PCB.

Step 4 — Clean the keyboard surface. With keycaps removed, use a soft brush to sweep debris away from all switch housings. Follow with cotton swabs dipped in 90%+ IPA to clean around each switch stem and in the corners of the plate. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with a little isopropyl alcohol to clean the keyboard base — wipe the plate surface where the keycaps were seated.

Step 5 — Clean stabilizers (optional but recommended). While the keycaps are off, inspect the stabilizer wire and housings on the spacebar, Enter, Shift, and Backspace positions. Wipe any dried lubricant residue from the wire using a cotton swab with IPA. Apply a fresh dab of dielectric grease to each wire end where it seats in the housing. Properly lubricated stabilizers eliminate rattle and improve spacebar feel.

Step 6 — Reinstall keycaps. Refer to your layout photo when replacing keycaps. Press each keycap firmly until it clicks into place on the switch stem. For stabilized keys, hook the stabilizer wire into the keycap’s stabilizer inserts before pressing down onto the switch stem.

How to clean laptop keyboard keys

Laptop keyboards require a different approach — the scissor mechanism is fragile and the keys can’t be removed in bulk the way mechanical keycaps can.

Surface clean

Hold the laptop at a 75-degree angle and use compressed air at a low angle — Apple recommends blowing from left to right along each key row at approximately 75 degrees from horizontal. Never blow straight down into the scissor mechanism.

Individual key cleaning

For stubborn sticky keys on a laptop, use a cotton swab lightly dampened with 90%+ IPA to clean around the keycap edges. Avoid letting any liquid flow under the keycap onto the mechanism.

Removing laptop keycaps for cleaning

Most laptop scissor keycaps can be removed with a flat plastic spudger — insert it at the corner of the key and gently pry upward until the cap releases from the scissor clips. Do not use metal tools, which break the clips. Not all laptop keys are safe to remove — check your model’s keyboard guide before attempting to remove any keycap wider than a standard letter key.

After cleaning — test every key

Reinstall all keycaps and test every key before regular use — cleaning is complete only when all keys pass the test.

Open the keyboard tester online and press every key row by row. Every key should turn green immediately after pressing. Any key that stays dark after cleaning was either already failing before you started, or was disturbed during the cleaning process — check the keycap seating and switch stem for that specific key.

If a key that was working before cleaning now chatters or double-registers, the switch contact may have been disturbed by the cleaning process. Run the keyboard chatter test to confirm and, if needed, reseat or replace the affected switch using the keyboard switch tester to verify it registers cleanly.

Test every key after you’re done

Open the keyboard tester online and press every key before closing up and returning to regular use. Cleaning occasionally dislodges a switch that was already marginal — catching it immediately means reseating the keycap rather than wondering why a key stopped working a week later.

Use the keyboard switch tester if you replaced any switches during the clean — it tracks which keys have been tested and flags any that don’t register across multiple presses.

Use 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol only. 70% IPA contains 30% water, which is too high — it can seep into switches and take hours to evaporate, risking damage to PCB traces and switch contacts. 90%+ IPA evaporates in seconds and is safe for both ABS and PBT keycaps when applied on a cloth rather than sprayed directly.

Wipe each keycap top with a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with 90%+ IPA. Use a soft brush to sweep debris from between the keys. Press cleaning gel into the gaps to pick up fine particles. This removes surface oils and loose debris without removing keycaps. For buildup on the keycap sides and under the edges, keycap removal and soaking is the only complete cleaning method.

Cleaning fixes sticky keys caused by debris or dried liquid residue around the switch stem or keycap sides. It doesn’t fix sticky keys caused by a deformed or worn switch spring, a bent switch stem, or a stabilizer that’s lost its lubrication. If a key stays sticky after cleaning, the switch mechanism itself needs attention — lubrication or replacement.

Air-dry keycaps upside down on a microfiber cloth for 2–3 hours minimum before reinstalling. A low-heat hair dryer on the coolest setting speeds this up to 20–30 minutes. Never reinstall damp keycaps — moisture trapped between the keycap underside and the switch housing takes much longer to evaporate than the surface appears and can damage the switch over time.
